The Byzantine Basilica: A Personal Photo-Illustration Project
During my time at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, I embarked on a personal project, “The Byzantine Basilica.” This captivating series of photo-illustrations showcases portraits of individuals from Sochi, exploring the city’s unique cultural heritage.
Project Inspiration:
Amidst the excitement of the Olympic Games, I found inspiration in Sochi’s distinctive blend of cultures and architectures. I sought to create a visual narrative reflecting the city’s Byzantine influences and its people. Through this project, I aimed to capture the essence of the human experience, transcending cultural boundaries.
Creative Process:
Thanks to Ian Bonilla, who lent me his camera, I took portraits of Sochi’s residents, which served as the foundation for my photo-illustrations. I then employed my skills in image manipulation and illustration to transform the photographs into captivating, dreamlike portraits. Each piece was carefully crafted to highlight the subject’s character, blending realism with artistic expression.
Project Outcome:
“The Byzantine Basilica” series is a testament to the beauty of human connection and cultural diversity. This personal project allowed me to explore my creative vision, experimenting with photo-illustration techniques and pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. The resulting portraits are a poignant reflection of the Sochi community, a memorable experience that unfolded parallel to my Olympic endeavors.
